Fashion at the 2010 Golden Globes
Events such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars tend to invite much if not more discussion over the fashion on display than on what awards were given out and this year’s Golden Globes were no exception. On the whole there were mostly fashion winners, with little fashion disasters on show bar the media coverage of the legs of Precious star Mo’Nique (winner of a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress). Mo’Nique posed for photographers and was quite happy to raise her Reem Acra gown to reveal a pair of extremely hairy, unshaven legs. Another actress who received much press-coverage for her legs was Jennifer Aniston, but this time for merely showing off her shapely pins in a black Valentino dress slashed up to the thigh. While some fashion commentators have labelled the dress as both classy and sexy, others have dismissed the one strap, floor length gown simply boring.
Black was a popular choice not just for Aniston, but many other attendees who chose the sombre colour it as a mark of respect for the victims of the Haiti disaster. One such person was Penelope Cruz who wore a black Armani Prive fishtailed dress. Kate Winslet wore Yves Saint Laurent, and like Aniston’s dress it featured a one-shouldered strap, detailed with a line of sparkling detail. Mariah Carey also wore a simple black dress, but with a very low-cut v-neck showing off much of her cleavage. Helen Mirren also chose black, wearing a classy dress which clung to her enviable waist and so too did Julia Roberts who livened up her simple black dress with a large golden necklace. Courtney Cox wore a black dress by Victoria Beckham (proving that Victoria’s prowess and recognition as a bona-fide fashion designer continues to be recognised by the stars). However, one of the black outfits to be universally panned by fashion commentators was Cher’s velvet dress with an off-centre corset complete with eyeholes and black cord criss-crossing over her left breast, but then what would a major, star-studded event be without Cher turning up in a strange and unflattering dress?
In stark contrast to all the black on show, Kate Hudson chose to wear what appeared to be a structured white bridal gown complete with white tottering heels. But it was feminine, floaty dresses in tones of purple and pink that were out in force for the night. Maggie Gyllenhall wore another fishtailed dress but unlike Cruz’s black number, Gyllenhall’s was a peach-pink design by Roland Mouret. Christina Aguilera wore a peach coloured Versace dress which included a bold silver corset style front, which showed off the singer’s curves perfectly. Drew Barrymore also wore a nude-toned dress with added sparkling diamante details at the shoulder and waist, details which were somewhat distracting from an otherwise lovely dress. The preference for pale, nude, pink and salmon colour tones did some attendees more favours than others. The pale-skinned Gyllenahall appears washed-out by her choice of dress colour, as did Calista Flockhart who wore Alberta Ferretti, a dress with shimmering silvery stripes. Flockhart’s tiny frame and ultra-white skin-tone paired with the pale, silvery dress made the actress appear fragile and pale. Another actress who wasn’t looking peachy in peach was Nicole Kidman who dressed in a champagne coloured Nina Ricci dress which hung in drapes on Nicole’s slim frame making the actress appear shapeless.
Cameron Diaz broke the mould of all black-wearing stars and opted instead for a bright red dress by Alexander McQueen, paired with a pair of simple black heels. Others who decided on a more colourful approach were singer Fergie who wore lilac, as did Leona Lewis in a Roberto Cavalli dress with panels of fabric adding interest around the torso and bust line. Sandra Bullock also opted for purple, and was not the only attendee who favoured a very feminine floaty look, in terms of colour she also went for purple tones, but in contrast to Leona Lewis’s more structured dress, Bullock’s was deep-toned purple design by Botega Venetta which had a rusched bodice and sheer, flouncy floor-length dress which allowed for veiled glimpses of her legs. Heidi Klum also went for the floaty, frilly, feminine look in a Roberto Cavalli dress with a fishtail made up of layers ruched net fabric, all in pale grey-blue. Likewise Diane Kruger chose a Christian Lacroix dress with a deep pink, layered, ruffled fabric detail around the neckline and waist, fading to a lighter tone lower down the garment.
Along with the stars opting for much black, there was also an absence of too much ostentatious display of blinging jewellery. What many of the celebrities shared in common was the accessory of the night, a small, red ribbon to draw awareness of the disaster in Haiti
